There have been many historical events that played a paramount role in mapping the trends of the United States (US) from the 1800’s to the 1920’s. Some of these events took place during very prominent periods of time such as the shaping of the Reconstruction Act in early 1865 to its end in 1877. Reconstruction, after the Civil War, was the desired intent in bringing the southern states back into the Union, provide legal citizenship and protection for the liberated slaves, and establish the rights of the people. The period of Reconstruction experienced many successes along with its failures. The leading cause to the end of Reconstruction was due to the failures of the federal government and their lack to maintain the southern white resistance in 1877. This brings us to another event, which is the leading of US Industrialism in the 1900’s. At this time the US nation produced more than thirty percent of manufactured product throughout the world. Innovative ideas as sisted in spurring the US past its rivals. Another historical event that still has a place in society today is the women’s suffrage movement and social reform that commenced as early as the mid-19th century. Women across the nation stood together in their resolve for peace, equality and women’s rights. Furthermore, their fight often took women away from their families. The numerous controversial issues surrounding gays and lesbians, including same-sex marriage, adoptions, and school gay-straight alliances, have brought sexual orientation and homophobia to the front of American social conscience. Although gays and lesbians seem to be more visible in the United States and media images of gays and lesbians have become familiar, violence against gays and lesbians continues to rise and anti-gay measures are common in the political arena. However the question that Americans often have is: what exactly is it that the LGBT community wants? The answer is simple. LGBT want the same chance as everyone else to pursue health and happiness, earn a living, be safe in their communities, serve their country, and take care of the ones they love. The main issue concerning LGBT people is â€Å"coming out†, which is the process of understanding, accepting, and valuing one’s sexual orientation/identity. Coming out includes both exploring one’s ident ity and sharing that identity with others. LGBT individuals have to deal with what it means to be different in a society that tends to assume everyone to be heterosexual and that tends to judge differences from the norm in negative ways.
